My First Sewing Machine

Yesterday, apart from the good work, I went to buy my first sewing machine :)!
I've never sew in my life but I want to learn for the future. When I am a mother, I think it will be important to be able to cut and attach together old clothes - to save money.

To get myself going I have selected five old dresses and skirt that I love but cannot fit in them, or they look like 1990s fashion (well, I bought them in that era ;), therefore I want to spice them up a little bit :P.
I will try to do something with them and then share the pictures with you.
Below is the lucky machine!
I chose Brother because, in my opinion, it was good value for money - it cost £79.99, it has 2 years guarantee, 14 stitches and clip-on presser feet, as opposed to 2 years guarantee and 10 stitches for £109.99 Singer! For my sewing experience and my needs this one seems good for the time being.

Does anyone know how to sew? Did I choose the right machine? (I can still return it, if you have better suggestions) Can someone direct me to a website for sewing novice like me?

xoxo,

  1. Not a lot of sewing experience here but Brother is a good brand from what I have heard.

Good luck! Can't wait to see completed projects.

  2. I grew up using Singer machines (we had two regular machines and a serger). I believe Brother is a good brand, especially given the price for features. You are doing basic projects on it, not sewing a wedding dress or making jeans, so I think you should be fine. I loved sewing. I need to invest in a sewing machine. Probably will purchase one around baby making time.

  3. How exciting!! I've always wanted to learn how to sew too. I mean, we had home ec in high school where they told us some but I've forgotten it all! Good luck!

  4. Sewing is one of those things that I really want to learn to do. I am gonna take the same approach. Just buy a machine. Then through books and youtube, hopefully I will turn into a sewing monster!! Good luck.

  7. I have the same machine! And I love it!

I am teaching myself, I am basically following easy tutorials and getting to grips with the terms etc.

It is my fave hobby now! Good luck and enjoy xx

  10. Hey, saw a comment you left on Theta Mom and then saw that your latest post was about a sewing machine and had to come check it out. I am a sew-a-holic. :)

Much congratulations on your first machine. I have a Brother serger which I have a love/hate relationship with at the moment (I think the problem is with me less than the machine though). My sewing machine is a Singer and I love it, but if you're just starting out you're probably going to be fine with the machine you got for awhile.

If you're looking for sewing inspiration I could hook you up with some great blogs I read on a regular basis. Come check out my blog and maybe I can inspire you too!
