The Big Chop

I finally I went for it. I chopped all my locs off.bigchop1

Growing my natural locs taught me one great wisdom in life: patience. I was impatience for so long and before embarking on motherhood I chose to grow my locs. Initially I was intimidated by going natural and having short hair. Sometimes I wondered why I was going all the way (locking my hair), but in the end I was patient and my hair grew beautifully. It was good to learn that because getting to my daughter I had to employ that patience.

But before the beginning of 2013 I felt the time was ripe to be fearless and cut all my hair off – I trimmed it back in September 2012.

This year I want a clean fresh start and the only way I was able to put the foot in the right direction was letting go all my locs. I loved my long locs. It was my pride because it took me three years to achieve the shoulder length hair.P9195946 bigchop2Having short natural hair can be intimidating yet it’s liberating because it makes you realise that it’s just hair and it will grow back again. bigchop03

I cut my hair off back in 2005 to donate, it was the first time I had short hair and it was a shock, but SO EASY, I loved it.

  6. I'm new to your blog but I want to say your hair looks FABULOUS! I actually went totally natural (not wearing a wig (which I wore for like 1 1/2 years) or getting my hair straightened which I did before the wig)the end of 2009. I was kind of scared what my boyfriend turned husband would think. But by then I didn't care, I was FREE! For awhile I did struggle because I thought that I would be more attractive with straight hair (Vain, I know!) My husband has never heard so many people give me compliments on my hair. When it starts to grow longer, I cut it back just so that I can easily manage it.
Keep up the good work, IT. LOOKS. GREAT!!

  8. I've been cutting my hair and keeping it shorter than usual this last year. I think that I'm finally ready to let it grow back out again. At the end of the day it is just hair like you said. But still I think the cutting of hair and trying something new is symbol of courage and strength!

  14. Wowee mama - I say good on you!!!! It looks awesome by the way, short hair really suits you! I had short hair for a couple of years during high school and loved it, but I'm not as brave as I used to be anymore. The last time my hairdresser accidentally cut too much off, I ended up in tears! (silly really, cos - it's only hair!).

  17. Wow, you are brave to cut your hair off. I've cut my hair off twice, once when I was 11 and was following my 2 best friends (mine looked awful) and once was unplanned when I asked my mum to trim my hair and she ended up cutting the whole lot off 'by accident'. Let's just say I suit longer hair much better. I think you really suit short hair. I hope you are enjoying the change!

  18. You look gorgeous in that last picture of you in the snow. When I first "went natural" I cut off a lot of my hair as well. I've always had long hair, and I cut my hair to about 3 inches. People thought I was crazy, but I loved it. It was very different for me, and yes, LIBERATING.
